Thanks for you email. As far as I can tell I was using an alternate install cd ( not a genuine ubuntu disk but a copy from "The Linux Emporium" ). Now that I examine it, there is a file on it that is called "cdromupgrade" that seems to work if I use that and select the option fetch packages over the net ( if I select not to use the net it does not proceed ). I will let you know if it works in a couple of hours.
