This basically happened to me while I was following the wiki guide to install chinese on Kubuntu (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SCIM/Kubuntu?action=show) on an en_US.UTF-8 locale. Whatever I do, I've never been able to get chinese input working under Kubuntu/Kde, it works fine under Ubuntu/Gnome though...
