OK that modules.dep is showing us a chunk of the problem - it's missing the line: /lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/volatile/nvidia.ko . Did that running sudo depmod -a add a line that started /lib/modules/2.6.20-15-generic/volatile/nvidia.ko to that file?
