For those facing a similar problem under FreeBSD, I compiled a version
of the above code and tested it on 9.0-RC3. With ACPI disabled, it
functioned like described, but it has no effect when acpi is enabled. I
don't know enough about the workings of OSs to hazard a guess as to why
it works under Linux but not BSD, but I'd welcome any suggestions for
further research.
