I am not sure whether my problem is exactly same, although the symptoms are same: Overheating and abrupt shutdown. (The problem was not there on 11.10). I have Dell Vostro 3700, NVIDIA, core i7 with Ubuntu 12.04 (development version), kernel 3-2-0-6.
