I scrolled back a bit, and decided to try and follow the proffered procedure of running dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Following that procedure, X is running off the Feisty Desktop Live CD at 1280x1024. Attached are the xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files. The ones called "good" were after the reconfigure. THe ones called "old" are the ones from before running dpkg-reconfigure. (Presuming that the reconfigure made a backup file, and that the file xorg.conf.200705214138 is the backup. It appears so.) I note the following possibly very interesting observation: The Xorg.0.log file shows a SUCCESSFUL DDC transfer this time around. The xorg.conf file DELETES the line "load i2c".
