Sounds like a problem with I/O, which I noticed a long time ago in
11.04. Unity and/or compiz seems to be severely affected by a busy disk.
I agree it makes no sense -- why should the GUI be affected by disk
activity at all... ? The bug description only mentions an increase of
200MB. While that's large, it shouldn't cause a huge change in the
amount of swapping, unless caused by other processes.

I think I saw someone had logged a bug for this elsewhere. Don't know
the ID.

Chauncellor, can you confirm your problem is linked to the amount of
disk/swap activity? If not then it should be discussed in a different
bug.
