The question, "Is there any reason why it needs to be installed on your system?" was inappropriate as it did not address the question that was asked but simply muddied the waters.
However, since it was asked: The reason those of us using the RTL8192E driver that Ubuntu provides fails after short-term use. This has been stated time and time again in the forums, but no one is listening and too many variants of the problem get injected into these forums. The Debian driver is one option for those of us trying to make the 8192E wireless card work. Can someone tell us why the error originally posted in this thread cannot be resolved. I'll restate it for clarification: ErrorMessage: trying to overwrite '/lib/firmware/RTL8192E/boot.img' I CAN confirm this error, and with ALL Debian releases of the driver, including lenny, squeeze, wheezy, and sid. I CAN confirm this error in both x86 AND x64 Ubuntu releases. (Aside: the major concern, imho, is that Ubuntu defaults the RTL8192E card to using the 8192SE driver. The SE driver cannot be removed, and is conflicting with the appropriate driver data.) I CAN confirm this error for Ubuntu releases since 9.04 (that is, 9.04, 9.10, 10.04, 10.10, 11.04, and 11.10 all fail when attempting to install the Debian driver as an alternative to the Ubuntu default driver) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/851395 Title: package linux-firmware 1.34.10 failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite '/lib/firmware/RTL8192E/boot.img', which is also in package firmware-realtek 0:0.28 To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-firmware/+bug/851395/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
