A further update, I tested on a fresh load and the same problem exists.

This leads me to believe that the issue with with the way I am creating
these luks encrypted drives.

I have tried creating the devices the following ways:
The cryptsetup -luksformat method using the default options and then formatting
the mapped device

then the luksformat tool (I think written by you Martin?) using the
default vfat and with ext3.

I have tried it with 4 different flash drives and multiple drive
enclosures with no luck via gnome-mount. Opening them and mounting them
manually as well as using pmount work fine.

Can someone here who has a working drive tell me how they created it?
Maybe I am doing something wrong?
