Public bug reported:

Hang occurs at the K3B splash screen, before the GUI displays.

Keyboard and mouse unresponsive including sysrq.

Cannot provide any other hang information because the entire terminal is
frozen on hang. Xclock freezes too so apparently the cpu halts, not just
the interrupts. Sorry, I am not a sysadmin so I do not know which log
files to send or how to include them with this report. I did do some
reading on submitting bug reports but the hang is intermittent and I do
know which logs to retrieve after a hang even if the system were
responsive. I may update the report if I can find out anything more.

Only hard reset or power cycle recovers.

Would not trouble you except this problem terminates all jobs in process
so it seemed important.

I saw a similar K3B report somewhere but it was thought to be hardware-
specific to a VIA chipset that had just been installed on a new disk
controller card(?). My system probably does not have that hardware and I
could not find that report again. Anyway it does not seem to be hardware
specific since I also experienced this same problem.

Intermittent problems can be difficult to duplicate and debug, but I
thought you might want to know about it anyway. Good luck.

Thank you for your hard work. Otherwise, the system is running
beautifully. Thank you for Linux.

Platform: Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit, Intel DG965WH main board (ICH8 chipset?,
specs available from Intel) with Core 2 Duo E6400 2.13GHz, GEForce
7300GS driving 2 displays (HDTV 1080i via HDMI and SDTV via svideo), 8GB
DRAM, Seagate SATA and Pioneer BD-DL running as slave on PATA with an
inline SATA-PATA adapter plus an older NEC/SONY dvd PATA on master.

(For some unknown reason, various Linux distributions - but not all -
exhibit inconsistent behavior on this system and have difficulty mapping
the PATA if I reverse the master and slave, with very odd behavior that
prevents LiveCD boot and installation from CD. The drive order changes??
when the PATA boot drive is remapped?? after the kernel starts? I think
maybe... but this is a different issue entirely (I hope) that does not
affect the K3B problem I am reporting. PATA master/slave problems
abound... I used to find them all the time when I did applications
engineering for a drive controller manufacturer so I do not pay
attention to them, I just avoid conflicting configurations whenever
possible because master/slave problems are too ubiquitous to debug and
mostly the disk controller interface on the hard disks is to blame which
is why specific combinations of drives may or may not play together as
master and slave or may work only in one configuration but not the
other. In any case PATA is a dead technology now.)

Boot drive 400GBx2 formatted mbr. Data drive 1.5TBx4 formatted GPT.
Various RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5 volumes mounted. Full disk encryption on
main data volumes (cryptsetup, not LUKS format). Mythtvfs mounted using
mysql and fuse. Mythbackend running.

System is intended for amusement of disabled person (formerly hardware
engineer technical but not a programmer or sysadmin) so I may not be
able to respond to inquiries in a timely fashion depending on health
factors. In any case, there does not seem to be much information that
can be developed without an execution trace and that is beyond my
capabilities.

Problem duplicated several times intermittently. Once it hung
immediately after boot, before the encrypted file systems were opened.
There was a burst of hangs and then it stopped so I am filing the
report now on the expectation that some asynchronous factors affect the
hang and it may or may not return. I did lose some data due to the first
hang when a job terminated.

I do not know how you will duplicate it if it is hardware specific, but
on the off chance that it is not, I filed this report. If I could figure
out how to update that other report I saw, I would have. Sorry, this is
my first bug report.

Oh, wait a minute, here it is:
