OK, not certain what your problem was with building. I'll freely admit that I'm a Gentoo expat, so I almost certainly didn't do this The Ubuntu Way... but it built fine on my system.
I used the source files available here: http://packages.debian.org/testing/source/bonfire After installing all the build requirement packages listed on that page, as well as 'beagle-dev' I just went for it with a './configure' and a 'make' followed by 'make install'. Worked like a charm.
