I have a similar behavior, under ubuntu 11.10 amd64 using xsane 0.998. Works fine in flatbed mode.
With the TMA, in 1200dpi I can do a draft scan, trying a real one kills the scanner: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd xsane rqt 192 rq 12 len 1 ret -110 After that the scanner has to be powered down.
