To meet short term needs I've had to rearrange some hardware to work
around this problem; I'll leave this issue as-is since I should in a
couple of days have a chance to clone the drives so I can test the same
software configuration with a mainline kernel on a similar hardware
configuration under similar load.

Also, I haven't had any issues like this on the spare hardware that I'm
using with the system, a Supermicro X7DCL-3 (Intel 5100 chipset) /
single Xeon E5410 / 24GB RAM   (far fewer logical processors!)
