@Jeff - Does the 1.11 BIOS available at http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page help? It contains the following fix:
* (Fix) Fixed an issue that might fail to go into standby/sleep state or resume normal operation from standby/sleep state. To find it, select the "Find Product" tab, then choose "Thinkpad Edge laptops", then choose "Thinkpad Edge 13", then (this is where it gets a little bit technical and it is important to be careful" choose "0217", then choose "30U", then choose "All OS".
