This is also affecting me.  It hung on up after the initial upgrade-
install from 11.04 to 11.10 and now after the first kernel kernel update
(3.0.0-12-generic => 3.0.0-13-generic).  The irritating workaround is to
boot into the last bootable kernel (3.0.0-12-generic in my case),
uninstall using vmware (8.0.1 workstation) uninstall scripts, reboot
into current kernel which will then boot, and reinstall vmware.
Fortunately the vmware uninstaller leaves all vm's and settings in
place, nevertheless it is a bit of a hassle.  With verbose booting you
can see the hang occurs on "Starting Workstation Server     Fail"
