Public bug reported:

HP Scanjet 5590p
-----------------
Front end XSANE VERSION 0.998
-----------------
Ubuntu 11.10 32bit updated to 3rd December 2011
-----------------
Using the Transparency Media Adapter (TMA)
-----------------

The TMA is an accessory to the flatbed HP Scanjet 5590p scanner that has
it's own light source and is used to scan slides and negatives.

Normal flatbed usage works as expected most of the time.

Using the TMA, the scanner works first time around perfectly. Then upon
a subsequent scan an error message "Failed to start scanner:Invalid
argument" appears.

Using System Monitor the cpu is observed running at 100% at this point,
i.e. scan is completed and file written. During the first scan, at 2400
dpi, the cpu runs at about 30% usage.

It appears that the scan driver does not terminate correctly and instead loops
excessively pushing the cpu to 100%.
RAM is at about 25% usage throughout the successful scan and the second scan.

If the error message is then closed and the scan button clicked again,
the scan will start and complete, again throwing the cpu into 100%.

This cycle, scan - success; scan - error message; scan - success works
for the first three scanning attempts. Thereafter the error message is
thrown for each attempt to scan.

If Xsane is then closed and reopened an error message appears:- "no
devices available" and Xsane closes when the error message is closed.

To recover from this the scanner must be powered down and restarted.
However the on/off button on the scanner does not respond. The cancel
button does not respond either.

The scanner has to be powered down by unplugging the power supply. Re
plugging enables the scanner and it then behaves as described in the
cycle above.

** Affects: sane-backends (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
