I have used ubuntu lucid on this machine before without facing the mentioned issue. I did replaced my HDD as previous one got damaged and this is "SAMSUNG HM160HC" After replacing my HDD I was mostly working on ubuntu through virtualbox on my windows machine.
A month ago I again switched to dual boot mode and install ubuntu oneric alongwith windows 7. I didnt got any such error initially, it started all of sudden. I will follow the steps you wrote above and will share the output..
