I have now Ubuntu 11.10 installed. Fresh install, partions /, /usr, /var
freshly formatted and the system could umount. However, after installing the
uptodate updates, the same behaviour as before.

I am now down to run from tty1 init 1 several times and umount -a till
the filesystems are umounted. I am willing to provide more information
if necessary. IMHO the /etc/rc.0/S0umountfs script as the link to
/etc/init.d/umountsf is never reached. This seems apparent from the
fact that the message "will now umount all file systems" cannot be
detected.
