In case this information helps any, I am now getting only 1-2 frames per
second in glxspheres (which is using a whole CPU core). The rest of the
desktop is quite responsive, though.

I'm using compiz 1:0.9.6+bzr20110929-0ubuntu6, unity
4.24.0-0ubuntu2b1+nogeis and the xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.17.0+git20111125.16f5e224-0ubuntu0sarvatt~oneiric from xorg-edgers.

If I run glxspheres through the nvidia card via virtualgl, I get around
60fps (compared to 100-120 fps normally).
