Go to Launchpad and add the ppa for ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates. You will need to completely remove nvidia current with synaptic or via a terminal before you will be able to install the new version, if your system is as crabby as mine was about installing the 290.10 version. It certainly seems to work the charm for the white screen problem.
