One other point: I have doubts about the mouse controller being the cause. My computer can be working fine, then I'll leave and come back several hours later and the problem is back. I can't see how the mouse can cause problems when it's not being used. More likely, it's just compensating. Like walking slower when your tired. But eventually your going to have to eat something or take a nap. I think the real culprit here is Compiz. There's a big memory leak with certain graphics drivers. Obviously, though, not everyone's having the same issue. Just similar symptoms.
