By simply hangs, I mean it does not get to the point where it should
show its prompt.

  Binary package hint: freemat
  
  When trying to perform any command in freemat console, no result or
  output is provided.  The command typed is added to the history, however
  no variable is assigned, no error or other message is displayed.
  
  Moreover:
  After startup, freemat does not display the initial info lines (copyright 
etc..) and user must manually click "clear console" button to see the standard 
command prompt.
  
  FreeMat works much better as Win32 application under Wine :-)
