1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter
the problem,

This new behavior occurred after an update.

2. the behavior you expected, and

I expected to launch applications (i.e. update manager) by opening the
unity

icon thingy on top of the icon totem left side of screen. see
attachment "Screenshot at 2011-11-14 12:21:40"

3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as
possible).

But when I open it it has changed from before and now looks like
"Screenshot at 2011-11-14 12:21:57"

Clicking on any of the upper left three icons causes the window to go
blank except for the text box.

If I type "update" in the text box, expecting the unity thingy to offer
update manage as a choice icon, nothing happens, see "Screenshot at
2011-11-14 12:23:02"

As a workaround, I launch synaptic using "gksu synaptic" in a terminal
window.

If there is a chance of fixing this,I'll hang in there and try to assist
- otherwise I will scrap the installation, re-install (again) and see if
works. It seems to me since this laptop is just used as skype phone
and mobile mail with little customization that this problem might be
more prevelent.
