I have recently bought an Asus K43U with AMD processor. I found the same problem.
However while trying other distros (in a Unity avoidance strategy) I noticed the the version 3.x.x linux kernel that ships with Ubunto 11.10 does not have this problem but Mint 11 based on an earlier kernel does. Tried with various other variants too.
