ok-- 99% sure i tracked it down. the hardware drivers gui has no provision for the gcc version override option that the nvidia 285.05.09.pkg.run package offers. the official nvidia package installed from runlevel 3 wanted to use gcc 4.6, but i had gcc 4.4. the nvidia driver installation tool provides the option to continue and try to build the kernel module anyway, which i did, which worked perfectly. btw-with kernel 3.1.0, installed from kernel.org source, the nvidia 285.05.09.pkg.run doesn't throw the gcc error, it just compiles the module and works for me.
so, this needs to be closed out, or marked solved, anyway, don't bother with this bug report. thanks. ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Status: New => Fix Committed ** Tags added: 285.05.09 3.0.8 3.1.0 4.4 4.6 drivers gcc hardware i386 kernel linux-source module nvidia solved x86 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/887042 Title: package nvidia-current 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04.1 failed to install/upgrade: nvidia-current kernel module failed to build To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/jockey/+bug/887042/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
