On my S420, with HAL from feisty backports this slider is functional now (slow, but it works). Do you load the module manually? I noticed it only works with the slider by adding to /etc/modules the line "msi-laptop force=1" and rebooting. Please try this and get back to me. You can also check and complete http://megawiki.org/ and join the mailing list to share your experiences with this module, so it can be improved.
