I've got the same behaviour on a HP Compaq nc6400 with its iwl3945 wifi.
It is not solved by the kernel 3.1.0 rc10 (installed by the debian package in 
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ )

I notice that I can reenable the wifi adapter just by restarting the 
network-manager service 
(sudo service network-manager restart)
