I think this might be a solution. Since logging into another user account with unity 3d, there was no hanging, I thought there must be old settings, config files in the main account causing instability. I deleted a lot of these and logged back into unity. Since then there has been no hanging. I had to reestablish my settings of course. I had a backup of my email account settings for evolution and left some other settings alone, like .bash_history, .shotwell and some third party application settings.
