My deepest apologies!!!!! I must have filled in the wrong password the last couple of times I tried to connect to the VPN server from the cleanly installed Feisty system. Today I retried and must have entered the correct password because within seconds I got connected. In the logs of the server I noticed a couple of login failures ... so it DOES seem to be a Firestarter problem. I deinstalled firestarter and cleaned Iptables (--flush and --delete-chains are wonderfull things if you get your act together ;-) ).
