I had tried changing libdir=/usr/lib/... manually.
but when i do make the SUBDIR .la gets dynamically generated and it still 
points to /lib/....
I even tried starting from the ./autogen step for my module compilation, it did 
not help.
Wanted to document that here.

Will try the symlink approach. Thanks Steve.
