Not sure whether it is the same problem, but my laptop properly warned about low battery and hibernated when it worked on 10.04 and 10.10. Recently I upgraded to 11.10 and it started switching off without warning (4 times so far). It may be related to some package cooperation (I use TuxOnIce as default hibernation and suspend do not work on my Lenovo) but, well, let me say "me too".
