The bug exists in RC mainline kernel.

Holding shift/pressing ESC didn't bring the grub menu, so the bug is
either not in the kernel (grub? bootstrap?), or it prevents grub from
even displaying kernel menu.

For reasons I'd rather not disclose :) , I'm apparently running wrong
arch (i386 while I should be running amd64), so I'll reinstall Ubuntu
and see if the bug is reproductable on amd64 as well.
