thanks Chris -- though the reason I think it's the same bug is that the solution is the same, ie go back to gnome desktop. I've now tested it and it works pretty well on gnome.
(Actually, I still saw the sudden leap to x=0 or y=0 once or twice in hundreds of test strokes -- it must be some kind of race condition) (I just get the impression that Unity is nowhere near ready to use for the mainstream. I don't think any of the features are particularly helpful, and there are so many things that seem harder to do. As you say, eventually things will be sorted out.
