The bug seems to have vanished over time. I am still using 10.10 although this 
is a fresh installation on the same machine.
If I get to it I will try it with Oneiric although I think this bug was a 
combination of a few very specific factors which are unlikely to ever occur 
again.
As far as I am concerned there is no need to spend any time time on this bug.
My apologies for not keeping track of this bug.
