I have quite a story with this bug. Immediately after upgrading from
10.04 I had a problem with Nautilus crashing and I thought it was
related with the video drivers (it wasn't as I discovered later). So I
used the hardware drivers tool to update the video drivers, but the new
drivers were kind of buggy. So I deactivated them and this last move
made the empty-desktop-and-nautilus-menu-bar bug appear. So my choice
now is to either use the buggy drivers or face the bug and I can't find
a way to go back to where I was before all this :-/.

If I can help looking somewhere in my system I'll be glad to.
