I have the same problem with my HP Elitebook 8540w, Centrino Intel-N 7300. However I notice something else as well, that has to do with this matter. The notebook has a button with which you can enable/disable wireless, the light on the button will then change from blue(enabled) to orange(disabled). With 11.10 when wireless is enabled, the button flashes irregular but fast (more than once a second) and a lot of packet loss (till 30%). A similar solution as the one of manuel fernandez #30 fixed the issue with packet loss and slow internet. However... the light still flashes on and off, while it was constant blue(enabled) in 11.04.
