it's happened also to me. I have a travelmate 290 with ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9700 chipset.
In my case the log ends with (II) ATI: Candidate "Device" section "ATI Technologies, Inc. RV350 NP [Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 M10/M11]". (EE) No devices detected. Fatal server error: no screens found The attachment is the Xlog file. I tested the upgrade on a VMWare VM and it worked fine. I hope this can help your investigations.
