I have got the same problem with my Dell Latitude C600 under Ubuntu 6.06 but not with w2000 or with an old (!) redhat 7.1
I tried what has been proposed in Bug #47971: - installing the xfree driver of synaptics_drv.o - modifying the xorg.conf file ... with no results!
