I've found a temporary workaround (out of necessity as I didn't have the
option of cancelling the recovery process at any point which lead me in
a neverending loop):

delete the
~/openoffice.org2/user/registry/data/org/openoffice/Office/Recovery.xcu

This doesn't fix the original bug, merely ensures the recovery dialogue
doesn't pop up next time you start any OOo app.

This of course assumes that you always save consisntely and do not wish
to recover anything.
