Public bug reported: My Ubuntu audio is hooked to a stereo via IEC958 optical. At initial boot the volume for this channel is not being restored to it's previous setting, it always comes back at maximum volume.
If I open the sound applet it shows the volume in the correct place (half on) but the setting initially loaded into the hardware does not match what is displayed in the sound applet. As soon as I slide the volume setting in the sound applet the volume gets set to the correct value. It seems to me that at boot the saved value is probably getting set into the analog output device instead of IEC958. Later during boot the sound system sees my use of IEC958 and sets the applet to work correctly, but the restored volume has been set back into the wrong device. Alternatively the sound system may simply not be saving/restoring the volume on the IEC958 line. This problem has been around for several years.
