~$ sudo rmmod vesafb  resolved the issue for me, now using Ubuntu 7.04,
Feisty Fawn. I will test it with my old Dapper installation shortly.

I discovered this after following the steps on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend

The ¨hash matches device" result I got did not make any sense, but the
system did disable the splash screen on next boot, leading me to suspect
an issue with the frame buffer.
