I have done a bit more testing with the same kernel (while
acpi_backlight=vendor is enabled).

I can reliably reproduce the issue by running:
xset s activate

Before runnning that command the following worked without issue:
vbetool dpms off; sleep 2; vbetool dpms on

But after running xset s activate, then suspending and resuming the
machine (do get the display back), the vbetool dpms commands no longer
cause the display to blank and then return.

I do have access to this machine from another on the same network, so
just let me know what you want me to do from that machine while the
machine is in the "blanked" state to try to get the display back.

I will test with the daily and rc kernels next...
