In what might be related, I also notice that sometimes the same thing happens with drop-down comboboxes in dialogs (usually in netbeans). The drop-down part disappears immediately on mouse release. The only way to select an item is to focus on the combobox and use the arrow keys. But if you close the dialog and reopen it the problem usually has gone.
