For the HP you should still report the bug to HP. You actually do not
reach the full output quality of the printer. And do not think your
printer is too old. There are newer models which print with the same
protocol and they probably do not reach maximum quality, too.

Also report your problem on the Brother to Brother.

To the link to driver source code which you have posted, the linked
package is open source, but it needs a second package (LPD driver) which
is not open source. As the core driver is an LPD driver and not a CUPS
driver, there are also problems with passing option settings from CUPS
clients (applications) to the driver. So please report your problems to
Brother.
