I'm experiencing this same issue on Ubuntu 11.10 after installing the xubuntu-desktop package on top of a standard Ubuntu 11.10 install. The output of my Backtrace attempt is attached to this post. I ran two attempts in gdb, the first you'll see is without any arguments. The second attempt is with --no-daemon and --sync appended.
