***POSSIBLE SOLUTION***

I had the same problem. When I hibernated it seemed to just log out of X
and re-login. I also got the not enough swap space (I have 1GB of ram
and just 512MB swap).

Then I installed "hibernate" package. Now hibernation works flawlessly
by typing "sudo hibernate". Actually I have to use --force option. As
for now I haven't investigated why but the important thing is that it
works! Hopefully suspend to ram works too, but I haven't tried it yet.
