ThinkPad X61. I just did a partial upgrade (hundreds of software
updated). Then rebooted. Then watched video and regulated volume by
volume control keys. They didn't work. Then used volume controls. Then
the error occurred.

My system:
$ lsb_release -rd
Description:    Ubuntu oneiric (development branch)
Release:        11.10

$ apt-cache policy indicator-sound
indicator-sound:
  Installed: 0.7.8-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 0.7.8-0ubuntu1
