The add printer wizard of the GNOME CUPS manager is also able to set up
printers which wer not auto-detected. Select "Use another printer by
specifying a port:" on the first page of the wizard near the bottom.
There choose "LPT #1" in the drop-down list. On the second page choose
your printer model manually if it does not get selected automatically.
Then your printer should work. Please tell here whether it really works.

For setting it up with HPLIP (allows ink level check and nozzle
cleaning) try

sudo apt-get install python-qt3
sudo hp-setup

and then follow the steps in the wizard. Does this work?
