Hi, attention Matthew Paul Thomas
Regarding :
696399 Simple Scan error message - can't find scanner
697074 Ubuntu Software Center not installing BRSCAN2 driver.

Hi, I was able to figure out how to get my brother mfc685cw scanner to work
with Ubuntu !
I added the comment below to my item. I also added this as a comment to
another reported bug (viola65 submitted #696399 Simple Scan error message -
can't find scanner)

Comment:
This is not a bug.... Ubuntu does not have the Brother Scanner Drivers, they
need to be downloaded and set-up manually. I found the following solution
for me by using the Ubuntu Software Center Help (scanning) and going to the
Brother Solution Center.

1) check for scan drivers:
Press Alt+F2, type "gksudo gedit /etc/sane.d/dll.conf"
Check for your scanner driver. (brother, brother2, brother3)
If there is a # in front of the scanner name, remove it.
Try the scanner again

2) If the scanner name is not in the list, the scanner drive needs to be
installed.
Go to the Brother Solution Center:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/instruction_sc
n1b.html
Follow the instructions for the Debian package (dpkg) - look at the examples
to help you.
Go to the Scanner Driver Download page, find your model (ex. DCP-195c =
Brscan3 model)
Click on the "Install Instruction : scanner driver"
Click on the scan driver you need for your scanner - USB or Network
(wireless) connection.
Follow the instructions.

Subject: [Bug 697074] Re: Ubuntu Software Center not installing BRSCAN2
driver.

Thanks for this report, Paul, and sorry for the very slow response.

As far as I can tell, Ubuntu has never had a package with "brscan" in its
name.
<http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=brscan&searchon=names&suite=all&;
section=all>

>From a Google search, it seems to be a driver for a Brother scanner, but
I can't find the package on Brother's Web site either.

If you still experience this problem, please reopen this report and let
us know where to find the package that you're trying to install. Thanks.
