I installed the mainline 3.x build. Here's my $ uname -a output: Linux ethan-ThinkPad-R400 3.1.0-0301rc4-generic #201108290905 SMP Mon Aug 29 10:33:12 UTC 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux The bug persists in this kernel edition, but it presents somewhat differently. I get heavy lagging that renders the computer unusable, but I have yet to get a full system freeze.
Also, I forgot to mention before that when the lagging begins, it seems to be worsened by moving the mouse. When it begins to freeze, animations on screen will continue to work, but if I touch the mouse everything (except audio) will stop for a few seconds, then resume, then stop again if I touch the mouse again. I can sometimes use keyboard navigation during this period, but it has a similar effect, just to a much smaller degree. It was like this before, too. I'm going to try downgrading to the linux-image-2.6.32-33-386 kernel and see if that's any better.
